Landstreicher "Die Berge"
Pure nature, dune feeling and open landscapes, extensive forests, heath and tree pipits... and even Scottish Highland cattle - where can you find all this?
Welcome to “The Mountains” between Borken and Velen!
There are five "peaks" waiting for you here - well, at least by Münsterland standards: the Tannenbültenberg (104,7 m), the Lünsberg (92,5 m), the Fliegerberg (84,7 m), the Hövelsberg (83 m) and the Dönersberg (90 m). Small highlights in the otherwise flat region! And don't worry - with a maximum gradient of two percent, the path is super relaxed and really comfortable.
“The mountains”, as they are simply called here, have not only breathtaking nature but also exciting stories to tell. The “Fliegerberg” takes its name from its former use as a gliding site. Today the hill is a valuable habitat for rare animals and plants and was declared a nature reserve in 2011.
An almost magical landscape is hidden between the hills - and on top of that, there are also historical treasures to discover: very old burial mounds from the Stone and Bronze Ages lie here, mostly inconspicuously hidden in the terrain. An information board at the Hubertusplatz hiking car park tells you more about this special piece of history. And of course you will find information boards everywhere about flora and fauna - there are lots of things flying, running and crawling here...
If you want to put your feet up for a while, you can do so on one of the many benches at Hubertusplatz. You are in the town of Velen, a recognized climatic health resort. Take the opportunity to take a deep breath and recharge your batteries.
Or pack a seat cushion and simply find your favorite spot along the way – there are enough beautiful corners to linger and enjoy.
